Kuwait-based Jazeera Airways has announced its intention to establish a low-cost airline in Saudi Arabia.

The new airline will be based at the King Fahad International Airport in Dammam, the capital of the Eastern Province and the fifth-most populous city in Saudi Arabia after Riyadh, Jeddah, Mecca (Makkah) and Medina (Madinah).

Though a launch date hasn’t been announced, coordination for the new airline is underway with regulatory authorities in Saudi set to complete procedures to obtain the necessary licences.

The news follows last week’s announcement that Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, prime minister and chairman of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), will establish a new national carrier, Riyadh Air.
