Marriott partners with TED to offer interactive, educational rooms

The Curiosity Room by TED invites guests to solve puzzles and learn about their destination

Marriott has formed a partnership with TED-Ed, the educational arm of media organisation TED, to offer a limited-time interactive room at three of its properties.

Being launched in London, Bangkok and San Francisco, The Curiosity Room by TED will offer mind-bending riddles integrated into the Marriott Hotels guest room design.

"Sparking curiosity from the start, guests embark on the adventure immediately upon entry to the room," a Marriott representative explained. "The entire room is a puzzle box waiting to be solved. Puzzle elements have been seamlessly hidden within the décor, and solving them all will lead guests to a grand finale and series of surprises and rewards."

The room’s Curiosity Journal serves as the guide with hints in case guests need help. When the final challenge has been completed, guests receive a certificate of completion and can celebrate with a complimentary dessert in the hotel’s restaurant.

The rooms, recommended for families with children aged seven and over, feature drawings by illustrator and artist Caleb Morris, founder of ‘Welcome to the Neighborhoods’ travel guide series. The hidden puzzles have been customised to the hotel destinations, featuring local landmarks and cultural references.

The rooms can be booked at the following hotels:

  • San Francisco Marriott Marquis: 15 July to 16 October 2022

  • Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park: 15 August to 15 November 2022

  • London Marriott Hotel County Hall: 15 September  2022 to 2 January 2023

Marriott International senior vice president  Premium Brands Jason Nuell said: “Marriott Hotels has always been a place where guests can be inspired at every corner of their experience and we’ve taken that to the next level with TED’s award-winning, educational arm TED-Ed.

"This one-of-a-kind adventure further fosters the notion for our guests to stay curious in their travels, opening their minds beyond a typical overnight stay and propelling them to explore the destination with a renewed desire to learn something new.”

TED-Ed’s founding and executive director Logan Smalley added: “Watching millions of people view and share TED-Ed’s educational animated videos online every day is a profoundly rewarding experience for our team of creators. What really excites me about our partnership with Marriott Hotels, though, is that it will enable families throughout the world, for the first time ever, to experience a totally unique version of TED-Ed in person.

"I think everyone who participates will gain, in the most tantalisingly fun way possible, a deeper understanding and appreciation of TED-Ed and their destination, and I’m grateful to Marriott Hotels for making that possible."
