Kerzner International assumes management of Bab Al Shams Resort

The Dubai-based desert resort will reopen in 2023 under the hospitality group’s new brand, Rare Finds

Atlantis and One&Only Resorts owner Kerzner International has assumed management of Dubai desert resort Bab Al Shams.

The property will close for an extensive refurbishment between May and early 2023, before reopening as part of Kerzner’s newly-launched resort brand Rare Finds.

Kerzner International CEO Philippe Zuber said: “I am excited to welcome Bab Al Shams Desert Resort to the newly introduced Rare Finds collection. The addition of this legacy landmark desert resort marks Kerzner International’s continued growth and expansion within the region.

“We have been part of Dubai’s storied history with one of the first ultra-luxury resorts with One&Only Royal Mirage followed by the epochal Atlantis, The Palm and we continue to be very bullish on the destination with the upcoming opening of Atlantis, The Royal Resort & Residences later this year and One&Only One Za’abeel joining Bab Al Shams next year.

“We are thrilled to continue to be part of the future of Dubai, and we look forward to welcoming guests to discover this new, evolved idyllic retreat.”

When it reopens next year, the resort will introduce a completely renewed aesthetic “whilst maintaining its authentic identity” – including a continuation of culinary experiences featuring modern Arabic cuisine that champions local producers and uses responsibly sourced ingredients.

In addition, the Desert Spa will offer both traditional and contemporary treatments, such as Hammam and Hot Sand therapy.  Facilities include couples’ treatment rooms with plunge pools, sauna and steam rooms, an indoor courtyard pool and a relaxation area.

Bab al Shams will also offer a selection of curated itineraries and bespoke outdoor activities, tailored to individual guests. Activities include desert equestrian sports, stargazing with in-house astronomers, sand boarding, archery, desert safaris, fireside storytelling and hot air balloon rides. The family-friendly resort will also have numerous break out spaces and activities for younger guests, including a games room and family entertainment venue.

Kerzner describes Rare Finds as a collection of hotels and resorts that “bring the essence of a destination to the forefront, with their proximity to rich cultures offering distinctly humbling journeys of incredible discovery”.

The refurbished resort will be run by general manager Gilles Sohier, whose most recent post was as resort manager at One&Only Royal Mirage in Dubai.
