Second Princess Cruises Sphere class ship is 20% larger than sibling vessel
Having taken to the water for the first time in September, Star Princess is on schedule to launch in 2025.
Sister ship Sun Princess, also built by Fincantieri in Monfalcone, debuted in February 2024 following a delayed delivery.
While 20% larger than any existing Princess Cruises ship, the 178,000-ton Star Princess will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The 4,300-passenger Star Princess was floated out at an an Italian ship yard on 26 September 2024. Building work is continuing to complete the ship in time for it to enter service next autumn.
The new ship features a three-storey dining room at the aft, and the Dome, a top-deck entertainment venue inspired by the terraces of Santorini.

Princess Cruises president John Padgett said: “Star Princess is the second ship in our new Sphere class. Fincantieri has again turned vision into reality, building on the success of her sister ship, Sun Princess, which has already captured the hearts of our guests with its elegance and cutting-edge design.
“Together, we are creating amazing machines that will inspire adventure and deliver unforgettable experiences for all who sail with us for decades to come.”
Star Princess’ inaugural sailing departs 4 October 2025 from Barcelona on an 11-day Mediterranean roundtrip, visiting six ports: Marseille, Rome, Naples, Sicily, Gibraltar and Cartegna.
The ship will then sail a seven-day cruise in the Mediterranean on 15 October 2025 before embarking on a 14-day transatlantic crossing to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on 22 October, where she will commence her inaugural season in the Caribbean.
